The qualification race for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) officially gathered momentum after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) unveiled the group stage draws ahead of the tournament scheduled to be hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The draw has already generated major excitement across the continent, with several African football heavyweights set to face difficult qualification campaigns on the road to East Africa. Fans and analysts have begun dissecting the groups, predicting potential upsets and fierce rivalries as nations battle for a place at Africa’s biggest football competition.
Among the standout fixtures from the draw is the highly anticipated showdown involving Ivory Coast and Ghana, two of West Africa’s most successful football nations. Their placement in the same qualification group is expected to reignite one of African football’s fiercest rivalries, with both countries aiming to secure early dominance in the race to AFCON 2027.
Defending champions Ivory Coast will enter the qualifiers under pressure to maintain their continental status, while Ghana are determined to return to the top after recent disappointing tournament campaigns. The inclusion of Gambia and Somalia in the same group adds another layer of unpredictability to the competition.
Elsewhere, Morocco, who continue to enjoy praise following their recent rise on the global football stage, were handed a manageable-looking group alongside Gabon, Niger, and Lesotho. Senegal, another continental powerhouse, will face Mozambique, Sudan, and Ethiopia in what many observers consider a balanced group.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles are also expected to attract massive attention throughout the qualification series as supporters hope the three-time African champions can secure a smooth path to the tournament. The qualifiers are likely to test the depth and consistency of several top nations, especially during difficult away fixtures across the continent.
CAF’s qualification format will see teams compete across multiple international windows before the final list of qualified nations is confirmed. The campaign is expected to stretch over the next two years, with every match carrying enormous significance for participating countries.

Beyond football, the 2027 tournament itself represents a historic milestone for East Africa. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will jointly host the competition under the “Pamoja” initiative, symbolizing unity and regional cooperation. It will mark the first time three East African nations co-host AFCON, reflecting CAF’s broader vision of expanding football infrastructure and development across different regions of the continent.
Preparations for the tournament are already underway, with improvements expected in stadium facilities, transportation systems, and tourism infrastructure across the host nations. CAF officials believe the competition could become one of the most commercially successful and culturally significant AFCON tournaments in recent history.
As anticipation continues to build, football fans across Africa are now turning their attention to the opening qualification fixtures, where early victories and unexpected results could shape the journey to AFCON 2027. With rivalries renewed and emerging nations eager to make history, the road to East Africa promises drama, passion, and unforgettable football moments.
