Canadian authorities have launched a search for one or more grizzly bears suspected of killing a 48-year-old mother and her 20-year-old daughter in Bella Coola, British Columbia. The victims, identified as Jennifer Balcarras and Selah Reed, were reported missing by relatives before their remains were discovered near the Snooka West Trail. The deaths have shocked the remote community and raised fresh concerns about human encounters with dangerous wildlife.

The search began on Sunday, November 1, after the women’s family raised concerns about their disappearance. Their vehicle was later found near the trail, prompting a search involving conservation officers, police and rescue teams. The first victim’s remains were discovered on Monday, with the second found the following afternoon. Authorities believe the women were killed in a grizzly bear attack but have not confirmed whether one or multiple animals were involved. Officers are working to locate the suspected bears, and residents have been warned to stay away from the area while investigations continue.

Balcarras was an art therapist and school counsellor who had recently moved to Bella Coola to begin a new chapter in her career. She joined the local school community in August and was remembered for her commitment to supporting students and colleagues. Her daughter, Selah, was 20 years old. Their deaths have prompted an outpouring of sympathy, with relatives organising a fundraiser to help cover funeral and related expenses.

The tragedy has also revived memories of a grizzly bear attack in the same region in November 2025, when 11 people, including elementary school students and teachers, were injured during an outdoor trip. Four suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to hospital. The bear suspected of carrying out that earlier attack was never captured. However, authorities have not established any connection between the two incidents and may use DNA evidence to determine whether the same animal was involved.

Bella Coola is surrounded by wilderness and is home to significant populations of grizzly and black bears. Although encounters are not unusual, fatal attacks remain a serious concern. The Nuxalk Nation has expressed condolences to the victims’ family and acknowledged the distress the incident has caused across the community. Meanwhile, conservation officers continue searching for the animal or animals responsible as residents await further updates from investigators.
