A jury has been sworn in for the trial of British comedian and actor Russell Brand, who faces seven sexual offence charges involving six women over an alleged period spanning 1999 to 2009. The jury was sworn in on Tuesday, October 13, at Southwark Crown Court in London, marking a major step in the high profile case. Brand, 51, denies all the charges, which include three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The trial is expected to last around six weeks.
The jury consists of eight men and four women, with one reserve juror also selected. Before the panel was finalised, the judge, Mr Justice Joel Bennathan, instructed prospective jurors to disclose whether they had watched a television documentary or read earlier newspaper reports concerning allegations against Brand.
The judge stressed that the allegations had been denied by Brand and warned jurors not to conduct independent research or discuss the case outside court. The instructions are intended to help ensure that the trial is decided on the evidence presented in court rather than previous media coverage.
The charges relate to allegations made by six women concerning incidents said to have occurred over a decade. Details previously outlined in court include allegations involving a hotel room during the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth, an incident involving a television worker, and an alleged encounter with a radio station employee. Brand denies the accusations, and the claims will be examined during the trial.
Prosecutors are expected to begin presenting their case on Wednesday, October 14. The proceedings will give the prosecution an opportunity to outline its evidence, while Brand’s defence team will be able to challenge the allegations and present its response.
Brand became widely known in Britain during the 2000s through television presenting, stand-up comedy and radio. He hosted major entertainment events, including the 2007 Brit Awards, and later appeared in Hollywood films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. In recent years, he has focused largely on online broadcasting and commentary.
The trial is being closely followed because of Brand’s public profile and the seriousness of the allegations. However, the charges remain allegations, and the court must determine whether they are proved. Brand’s denial of all charges remains central to the case as the proceedings get underway.
