Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has made history after headlining the NFL International Games halftime show in London, becoming the first African artist to headline an NFL halftime performance. The singer delivered her performance on Sunday, October 11, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the American football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Her appearance brought Nigerian music to a major international sporting platform, further highlighting the growing global reach of Afrobeats.
Ayra Starr opened her set with “Heaven Baby”, her collaboration with British singer Zayn Malik, before performing some of her popular songs, including “Rush” and “Hot Body”. She also treated the audience to a medley of “Ms. Paper” and “Hot Body”, alongside performances of “Santa” and “Dangerous”. The performance attracted attention from music fans, particularly those following the increasing presence of African artists at major international events. For Ayra Starr, the appearance represented another milestone in a career that has continued to expand beyond Nigeria.
Speaking after the show, the singer described the experience as amazing and expressed gratitude for the opportunity. She also highlighted the importance of artists using international platforms to represent their culture and the people who support their music.
The NFL announced Ayra Starr as its London halftime headliner in August. Her performance formed part of a record seven halftime shows planned across the league’s 2026 international games, which span several countries and continents. The choice reflects the growing relationship between music and international sports entertainment, where halftime performances offer artists opportunities to reach audiences beyond their usual fan base.
Ayra Starr has built an international following through songs such as “Rush” and “Commas”, alongside collaborations with artists from different parts of the world. Her third studio album, Starrgirl, released in August 2026, also features collaborations with Zayn Malik, Leon Thomas and Wizkid.
Her London appearance also recalls the growing Nigerian music presence at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Wizkid made history in 2023 as the first African artist to headline a concert at the venue. For Afrobeats, Ayra Starr’s NFL appearance represents another opportunity to introduce the genre to new audiences through a major sporting event. It also adds to the growing visibility of Nigerian artists on international stages, where music continues to connect audiences across cultures and borders.
