Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice has defended the party’s decision to suspend prominent supporter Tim Montgomerie after he publicly criticised leader Nigel Farage. Montgomerie, a former Conservative adviser and founder of ConservativeHome, questioned Farage’s decision not to attend the Clacton by election count and criticised his handling of issues surrounding a £5 million gift that is now subject to parliamentary scrutiny.

Tice said Reform was right to take action because members were expected to raise disagreements privately rather than publicly attacking the party or its leadership. He rejected claims that the suspension showed Reform was intolerant of criticism. The decision has nevertheless fuelled concerns about internal divisions within Reform, particularly as the party faces questions over Farage’s leadership and recent polling performance. Montgomerie has said he remains committed to Reform but was frustrated by the suspension.

Tice also unveiled new proposals aimed at increasing apprenticeships, including a 30% wage rebate for businesses employing young apprentices and a £2,000 retention bonus. Reform says the scheme would be funded partly by reducing student loan support for foreign students and cutting funding for degrees it considers poor value. The row over Montgomerie highlights the growing tension within Reform as the party attempts to present itself as a credible alternative government while managing disagreements among its senior figures.
