Prime Minister Andy Burnham has declined to say whether taxpayers will fund security for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle when they return to the UK later this month. Asked about their security arrangements, Burnham said it was a “private matter” and added that the decision was for Harry and Meghan as they prepare to move back to Britain.

The couple are expected to return for an extended period with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who are set to attend school in the UK. They will live in a private residence outside London while retaining their homes in the US and Portugal.

Security remains a major issue for Harry, who has been involved in a long-running legal dispute with the Home Office after losing his automatic right to publicly funded police protection following his decision to step back from royal duties in 2020. A review of his security arrangements is still pending. No official details have been released on what level of protection the couple will receive during their return. Burnham said the government wished them well as they made the move back to Britain.
