Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to move back to the United Kingdom with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, six years after stepping away from royal duties and establishing a new life in California. The couple are expected to relocate later this month to a private residence outside London, while their children are enrolled to begin at a British school in September. Despite the move, there are no plans for Harry or Meghan to resume their roles as working royals.
The decision marks a major change for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who left Britain in early 2020 after announcing that they would step back as senior working royals. They eventually settled in Montecito, California, where they have raised their children and pursued independent careers.
Their departure was followed by years of tension with members of the Royal Family. Harry and Meghan spoke publicly about their experiences within the monarchy through interviews, their Netflix documentary and Harry’s memoir, Spare. Harry’s relationship with his brother, Prince William, has remained particularly strained, while there have been occasional signs of improvement in his relationship with his father, King Charles.
The timing of the move is especially significant because the King was reportedly only informed about the family’s plans last weekend. Although the relocation was not arranged as a royal return, Charles is understood to welcome the opportunity to see more of Harry, Meghan and his grandchildren in a private capacity.
The development follows the family’s July visit to Highgrove, where Harry met his father. The meeting was described by the Palace as a private family occasion and was significant because it marked the first time Charles had seen Archie and Lilibet in person in more than four years.
Security remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the family’s return. Harry has previously said concerns about his safety prevented him from bringing Meghan and the children to Britain more often. His publicly funded security arrangements were reduced after he stopped being a working royal, and he later lost a legal challenge against the decision.
The Home Office has said security decisions involving royals and other public figures are made through the UK’s established protective-security system and described the arrangements as rigorous and proportionate.
For Archie and Lilibet, the move will mean adjusting to life in a country they have largely known through family visits rather than as their home. Their enrolment at a British school suggests the relocation is intended to provide the children with a more substantial connection to Britain and their father’s family.
Harry’s return could also be significant for his work with the Invictus Games Foundation. The next Invictus Games are scheduled to take place in Birmingham in 2027, giving him another important reason to spend more time in the UK.
There is currently no indication that Harry and Meghan intend to abandon their life in the United States completely or return to royal duties. Instead, the move appears to be an attempt to establish a stronger family presence in Britain while continuing their lives as private individuals.
After years of distance from the Royal Family and limited time in Britain, the Sussexes’ decision to return with their children could open a new chapter.
