Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by election with a commanding majority, strengthening speculation that he could challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the Labour Party leadership.

Burnham secured nearly 55% of the vote, defeating Reform UK and increasing Labour’s majority in a contest widely viewed as a test of Starmer’s leadership. The victory returns Burnham to Parliament and places him in a stronger position to influence the party’s future direction.

The result comes amid growing unrest within Labour, with some MPs reportedly calling for a change in leadership following disappointing election performances and declining support for the prime minister. Burnham has previously said that a vote for him would be a “vote to change Labour,” though he has not formally launched a leadership bid.

Starmer has insisted he intends to remain leader and fight the next general election, warning that internal divisions could distract the party from governing. However, Burnham’s decisive win is expected to intensify pressure on the prime minister in the coming weeks.

With Labour facing growing competition from Reform UK and internal calls for renewal, Burnham’s victory is being seen as a potentially significant turning point in British politics.
