UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged Andy Burnham to focus on the upcoming Greater Manchester mayoral election rather than any immediate challenge for the Labour Party leadership.

Burnham is expected to resign as mayor if he wins Thursday’s parliamentary by-election in Makerfield, triggering a fresh mayoral contest. Speculation has grown that he could mount a leadership challenge against Starmer after entering Parliament.

Speaking at the G7 summit, Starmer said a leadership contest would be a “bad thing” for the country and stressed the importance of securing another Labour victory in Greater Manchester. He also suggested Burnham could be offered a role in government if elected as an MP.

The comments come as Wes Streeting indicated he could trigger a Labour leadership contest as early as next week, arguing that uncertainty over the party’s future leadership would need to be resolved.

Despite growing pressure, Starmer insisted he intends to remain leader and described serving as prime minister as “the privilege of my life.” The outcome of the Makerfield by-election is now being closely watched as a potential turning point for Labour’s future direction.
