England’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been dealt a late blow following the withdrawal of Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento through injury. In response, head coach Thomas Tuchel has called up Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah as a replacement, handing the defender a surprise opportunity to represent his country on football’s biggest stage.

The change comes just days before England begin their World Cup campaign. Livramento reportedly suffered a calf injury during training, and medical assessments confirmed that he would be unable to participate in the tournament. FIFA regulations allow teams to replace injured players 24 hours before their opening match, paving the way for Chalobah’s inclusion.

For Livramento, the withdrawal is a particularly painful setback. The 23-year-old has been regarded as one of England’s brightest defensive talents in recent years. A product of Chelsea’s academy before moving to Southampton and later Newcastle United, Livramento rebuilt his career after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2023 that kept him sidelined for several months. His impressive performances upon returning earned him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s original World Cup squad and raised hopes that he would play a significant role in England’s campaign.

However, fitness concerns have followed the full-back throughout parts of his career. Reports indicate that his latest calf injury occurred during England’s preparations for the tournament, leaving the coaching staff with little choice but to seek a replacement.

The beneficiary of that decision is Trevoh Chalobah, whose football journey has been defined by patience and perseverance. A graduate of Chelsea’s famed academy, Chalobah progressed through England’s youth ranks from Under-16 level to Under-21 level before eventually earning his first senior international call-up. The versatile defender has built a reputation for his ability to play as a centre-back, right-back, or defensive midfielder, making him an attractive option for tournament football where squad flexibility is crucial.

Chalobah’s relationship with Tuchel may also have influenced the decision. The England manager worked closely with the defender during his time at Chelsea and has long been familiar with his qualities. The 26-year-old made his senior England debut in 2025 and had previously been included in England’s extended World Cup plans before narrowly missing the final squad selection.

His call-up is the latest reward for a player who has overcome several challenges during his career. After spending time on loan at clubs including Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town, and Lorient, Chalobah fought his way into Chelsea’s first team and established himself as a dependable member of the squad. His consistency, versatility, and experience at elite level football have now earned him a place in England’s World Cup camp.

The timing of Livramento’s injury also raises concerns for England’s defensive depth. With questions already surrounding the fitness of some defenders, Tuchel will be hoping there are no further setbacks as the Three Lions prepare for their opening group-stage fixture. Reece James is expected to remain England’s primary right-back option, while Chalobah’s ability to cover multiple positions could prove valuable during the tournament.
