Nigeria Caps Off Impressive Glasgow 2026 Campaign With 24 Medals to Secure Seventh Place on Commonwealth Games Table

Nigeria concluded its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a total of 24 medals, finishing seventh on the overall medals table after another impressive outing across multiple sporting events. The performance reinforces the country’s status as one of Africa’s strongest sporting nations while highlighting the depth of talent emerging across athletics, para-sports, weightlifting and combat sports.

According to the final medal standings, Team Nigeria secured eight gold, seven silver and nine bronze medals during the competition. While the total fell short of the 35 medals won at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Nigeria still finished among the top 10 nations at the event and remained one of Africa’s highest-ranked teams.

The country’s medal haul was built on standout performances across several disciplines. Athletics once again proved to be one of Nigeria’s strongest events, with athletes delivering podium finishes in both track and field competitions. Nigerian competitors also excelled in para-athletics, where the country continued its tradition of producing world-class performers. One of the tournament’s highlights came when Goodness Nwachukwu set a new world record in the women’s para discus event, underlining Nigeria’s growing strength in disability sports.

Nigeria also enjoyed success in weightlifting, wrestling and boxing, sports that have consistently contributed to the country’s medal tally at major international competitions. The performances reflected years of investment in athlete development and preparation by the Nigeria Olympic Committee and national sports federations.

Among the biggest individual achievements was Samuel Ogazi’s gold medal in the men’s 400 metres, a victory that further established the young sprinter as one of Nigeria’s brightest athletics prospects. His triumph added to a successful Games for Nigerian track and field athletes, who once again demonstrated their ability to compete with some of the Commonwealth’s best competitors.

The Glasgow Games were the first Commonwealth Games to be hosted in Scotland since 2014 and featured a streamlined programme following financial challenges that affected the event’s organisation. Despite the reduced number of sports, more than 70 nations and territories participated, with Australia topping the medal table ahead of England and Canada.

Nigeria has long been one of the Commonwealth Games’ most successful African nations. Since making its debut in 1950, the country has accumulated hundreds of medals and has consistently ranked among the leading teams from the continent. Memorable campaigns include record-breaking performances at Victoria 1994, Delhi 2010, Glasgow 2014 and Birmingham 2022, where Nigerian athletes delivered one of the country’s best-ever medal returns.

Although Nigeria’s overall medal count was lower than four years ago, sports analysts believe the Glasgow performance demonstrated encouraging signs for the future. Several young athletes made their Commonwealth Games debut, gaining valuable international experience ahead of upcoming competitions, including the African Games, World Championships and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
