Russia carried out one of its most extensive aerial attacks on Ukraine in recent months, killing at least 13 people and injuring dozens in a wave of overnight missile and drone strikes.

The attacks hit several regions across the country, with the hardest-hit areas being Kyiv and Dnipro, where residential buildings suffered significant damage. Ukrainian officials said children were among those injured, while rescue workers continued searching through debris for possible survivors.

President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russia launched more than 700 aerial weapons, including hundreds of drones and dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles. Although Ukrainian air defences intercepted the majority of the projectiles, several strikes reached their targets, causing deaths, injuries, fires, and power disruptions.

In Kyiv, explosions and air raid sirens rang out throughout the night as emergency services battled fires at apartment buildings and other civilian sites. Additional strikes were reported in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, where infrastructure and industrial facilities were damaged.

Russia said the attack was in response to recent Ukrainian operations and insisted that its intended targets had been successfully hit. The strikes followed warnings from Moscow that it would intensify attacks after accusing Kyiv of carrying out deadly assaults in Russian-controlled territory.

The latest bombardment highlights the continued escalation of the war, with Ukraine once again urging its Western allies to provide more air defence systems to help protect cities from increasingly large and complex Russian attacks.
