Iran has reportedly demanded guarantees from FIFA and the 2026 World Cup host nations over visas, security, and the treatment of its delegation before participating in next year’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The concerns come amid growing tensions between Iran and Western countries, particularly over travel restrictions linked to sanctions and national security measures. Iranian football officials are said to be seeking assurances that players, coaching staff, and government-linked officials will be allowed entry into all three host countries without disruption during the tournament.
The issue gained attention after reports that Mehdi Taj, president of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI), was denied entry into Canada ahead of a FIFA-related event due to alleged links with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which Canada and the United States classify as a terrorist organization. Iranian authorities reportedly fear similar restrictions could affect members of the country’s World Cup delegation next year.
Iran has already qualified for the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be the first tournament to feature 48 teams and will be jointly hosted across North America. However, the geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran’s participation have raised questions over whether sports and international politics can remain separate during one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
According to reports, Iranian officials have submitted a list of demands to FIFA, including guaranteed visas for all members of the delegation, respect for Iran’s national symbols such as its flag and anthem, and enhanced security protections at airports, hotels, training grounds, and stadiums.
FIFA now faces a delicate diplomatic challenge. While the organization oversees tournament operations and team participation, it does not control national immigration policies or border security decisions made by host governments. Analysts say this limits FIFA’s ability to fully guarantee Iran’s requests, especially if individual officials are flagged under existing sanctions or terrorism-related regulations.
The situation highlights the growing overlap between global sports and international politics. Iran’s national football team has frequently found itself at the centre of political controversy in recent years, including disputes over women’s rights, anti-government protests, and diplomatic tensions with Western nations.
During previous international tournaments, Iranian players and supporters have faced intense scrutiny over political gestures and public demonstrations linked to unrest inside the country. The national team drew worldwide attention during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar when players declined to sing the national anthem before a match in apparent solidarity with anti-government protesters back home.
The 2026 World Cup is expected to attract millions of fans and become one of the largest sporting events in history. But Iran’s concerns are adding another layer of complexity to preparations as organizers attempt to manage security, diplomacy, and immigration issues across three different host countries.
Despite the tensions, football analysts believe Iran is still highly likely to participate in the tournament. However, officials warn that disputes over visas, delegation access, and political restrictions could create diplomatic friction long before the competition begins.
