A former Scottish council leader has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting multiple young men, in a case that has sent shockwaves through local politics and raised concerns about abuse of authority.
Jordan Linden, who previously led North Lanarkshire Council, was jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of sexually assaulting five young men. The 30-year-old had stepped down from his leadership role in 2022 when the allegations first emerged.
The conviction followed a seven-day trial, during which the court heard evidence detailing a pattern of predatory behaviour. Linden was also found guilty of sending unwanted sexual communications to seven teenagers, with the youngest victim reported to be just 14 years old.
Sentencing took place at Falkirk Sheriff Court, where Sheriff Christopher Shead ordered that Linden be placed on the sex offenders register in addition to his custodial sentence. The ruling reflects the seriousness of the offences and the vulnerability of the victims involved.
The case has drawn particular attention due to Linden’s former position of public trust. As a senior political figure, he held significant influence within the community, a factor that has intensified criticism and public outrage following the verdict.
His resignation in 2022 came amid mounting pressure after the allegations surfaced, but the conclusion of the trial has now brought legal accountability. The case has also reignited broader discussions about safeguarding, accountability, and conduct standards for public officials in positions of authority.
Authorities and advocacy groups have emphasised the importance of supporting victims and ensuring that such cases are thoroughly investigated, regardless of the status of those accused. The conviction marks a significant moment in reinforcing that public office does not shield individuals from justice.
As the case concludes, it leaves lasting implications for political oversight and the mechanisms in place to prevent misconduct, particularly where power imbalances may be exploited.
