Virgil van Dijk has delivered a blunt assessment of Liverpool FC’s campaign, describing it as “unacceptable” following their latest defeat to Manchester United.

Liverpool’s 3–2 loss at Old Trafford marked their 18th defeat across all competitions this season, a statistic that underlines a dramatic fall from the standards expected of reigning champions. Despite a brief resurgence with three consecutive league wins, the result highlighted the inconsistency that has plagued their title defence.

Van Dijk did not attempt to soften the criticism. Speaking after the match, the Dutch defender insisted there could be no excuses for the team’s performances, stressing that both players and staff must take responsibility. He pointed to the unusually high number of league defeats—11 in total—as a key reason the campaign has fallen short, noting that such a record is unacceptable for a club of Liverpool’s stature.

The defender also called for significant internal changes, suggesting that much of the necessary improvement must happen “behind the scenes.” His comments hint at deeper structural or strategic issues within the club, beyond what is visible on the pitch.

Under manager Arne Slot, Liverpool entered the season with high expectations but have struggled to maintain consistency in both domestic and European competitions. The team now faces a tense نهاية to the season, with Champions League qualification still not fully secured. They may need at least four points from their remaining three matches to guarantee a place among Europe’s elite next season.

Van Dijk emphasized the importance of qualifying for the Champions League, not only for competitive reasons but also for the club’s financial health. Participation in Europe’s top competition remains a key objective, and failure to secure it would compound what has already been a disappointing year.

Referencing past examples, Liverpool’s struggles echo those of Leicester City, the last defending Premier League champions to record a similarly high number of defeats during the 2016–17 season. The comparison further illustrates how rare—and concerning—such a drop-off can be.

Despite the setbacks, Van Dijk reaffirmed his commitment to the club, expressing determination to help drive a turnaround next season. However, his message was clear: without serious improvement and accountability, Liverpool risk falling further behind the standards they have set in recent years.

With only a handful of games left, the focus now shifts to salvaging Champions League qualification—and beginning the rebuilding process for what the defender insists must be a far stronger campaign ahead.
