Nigerian star Tems and South African sensation Tyla have emerged as the most streamed African artists in the first quarter of 2026, underlining their growing dominance on the global music stage.
According to new streaming data, Tems led the rankings by a significant margin, surpassing one billion streams within a single quarter. She recorded approximately 1.02 billion streams, placing her not only ahead of her African peers but also among the most streamed artists worldwide.
Tyla followed closely behind, continuing her rapid rise as one of Africa’s most influential new-generation artists. Her global appeal has been fueled by chart success and viral hits, building on momentum from previous record-breaking releases and international recognition.
The report highlights a broader surge in African music consumption globally, with several established stars maintaining strong streaming numbers. Nigerian heavyweight Wizkid ranked among the top performers with hundreds of millions of streams, alongside Asake and Burna Boy, who also posted impressive figures in the same period.
Beyond the dominance of chart-toppers like Tems and Tyla, a new generation of African artists is rapidly reshaping the continent’s global music footprint, with fresh voices delivering hundreds of millions of streams in early 2026.
Among the standout performers, Ayra Starr recorded 484 million streams, while Rema followed closely with 454 million. Seyi Vibez also made a strong impression, amassing 391 million streams and continuing his steady rise within the Afrobeats scene. Rema, in particular, has maintained significant global momentum, building on years of crossover success that have seen him penetrate international charts and audiences.
The data underscores Nigeria’s continued dominance in the African music ecosystem. The country accounts for 14 of the top 20 most streamed artists and contributes roughly 72% of total streams, reaffirming its position as the continent’s leading export hub for popular music. This sustained influence is driven by a combination of high output, global collaborations, and the widespread appeal of Afrobeats.
South Africa also retains a strong presence, led by Tyla, alongside acts like Seether and WizTheMc, highlighting the diversity of sounds emerging from the region.
Beyond sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab music market continues to assert its influence. Veteran Egyptian star Amr Diab recorded 415 million streams, while Sherine followed with 270 million, reflecting the scale and engagement of audiences across the Middle East and North Africa.
Ghana’s contribution is led by Black Sherif, who amassed 186 million streams, maintaining his country’s visibility on the global stage. Meanwhile, emerging act Fola has quickly gained industry attention after recording 329 million streams, positioning himself as one of the most promising names to watch in the months ahead.
The latest rankings reinforce a shifting music landscape where African artists are no longer emerging players but central figures in global streaming culture. With sustained growth and increasing international collaborations, analysts suggest that the influence of artists like Tems and Tyla is likely to expand even further throughout 2026.
