Apple has announced a major leadership transition, naming longtime executive John Ternus as its next chief executive officer, succeeding Tim Cook after more than a decade at the helm.
The company said Cook will step down as CEO later this year and become executive chairman of the board, marking the end of an era that saw Apple grow into one of the world’s most valuable companies.
Ternus, currently Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, will officially take over as CEO on September 1, following what the company described as a long-planned succession process.
Cook, who has led Apple since 2011, will remain involved in the company’s strategic direction in his new role, including working with global policymakers and supporting the leadership transition.
In a statement, Cook expressed strong confidence in his successor, describing Ternus as a visionary leader with deep technical expertise and a long history at the company. Ternus, who joined Apple in 2001, has played a key role in developing many of its flagship products, including the iPhone, Mac, and AirPods.
The leadership change comes at a pivotal moment for Apple as it faces increasing competition in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced computing. Analysts say Ternus’s background in hardware design signals a renewed focus on product innovation as the company navigates a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
During Cook’s tenure, Apple expanded significantly, increasing its market value from around $350 billion in 2011 to roughly $4 trillion, while broadening its global footprint and product ecosystem.
Ternus is expected to build on that legacy while steering the company through its next phase, which could include new categories of devices and deeper integration of artificial intelligence across its products.
The transition underscores Apple’s strategy of promoting from within, ensuring continuity while positioning the company for future innovation in an increasingly competitive global technology sector.
