Newcastle United chief executive David Hopkinson says the club are not currently considering a managerial change, despite refusing to fully commit to the long-term future of head coach Eddie Howe.

Speaking after a difficult run of results, Hopkinson admitted he does not yet have a clear stance on Howe’s future but stressed the club remain focused on the remainder of the season.

Newcastle’s campaign has been mixed. They reached the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League and progressed to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, but domestic form has faltered.

A heavy 7-2 defeat to FC Barcelona in Europe was followed by a 2-1 loss to rivals Sunderland AFC in the Tyne-Wear derby, a result that drew boos from sections of supporters at St James’ Park. Hopkinson acknowledged the significance of the derby defeat, insisting it was taken seriously within the club.

“We take it seriously. There’s nothing within us that thinks, ‘Well, it’s just three points and on we go’. It has resonated,” he said.

The defeat left Newcastle 12th in the Premier League and increased scrutiny on Howe, despite his previous success at the club.

The 46-year-old led Newcastle to Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025 and guided them to EFL Cup glory last season, ending a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.

Newcastle’s hierarchy, however, are not engaging in discussions about a potential managerial change at this stage, with their immediate priority on improving results before the end of the campaign.

For Howe, the final weeks of the season could prove decisive as the club weigh short-term performance against long-term progress.
