Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson after four Jewish charity-owned ambulances were set on fire in north London.
The attack unfolded in the early hours of March 23, 2026, in Golders Green, an area known for its large Jewish population. Four ambulances belonging to Hatzola Northwest, a volunteer-run Jewish emergency medical service, were deliberately set ablaze outside a synagogue. The fire caused multiple explosions due to oxygen and gas cylinders stored in the vehicles, damaging nearby buildings and forcing evacuations, though no injuries were reported.
The Metropolitan Police in a statement, announced the arrest of two men, aged 45 and 47, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. The arrests, carried out in different parts of London, are being described as a significant breakthrough in the investigation. However, authorities believe at least one more suspect may still be at large, based on CCTV footage showing multiple individuals involved in the attack.
The Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism unit is leading the investigation, reflecting the seriousness of the case. While officials have not formally classified the attack as terrorism, it is being treated as an antisemitic hate crime. The possibility of a broader network or ideological motivation remains under scrutiny, particularly after a little-known group, Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, claimed responsibility online. Investigators are working to verify the authenticity of that claim and explore any potential links to foreign actors.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident as a “deeply shocking antisemitic arson attack,” expressing solidarity with the Jewish community and reaffirming the government’s commitment to tackling hate crimes.
Meanwhile, the head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, Helen Flanagan, has assured that investigations remains active and they will will continue to work to identify and seek to arrest all of those who may have been involved.
