Twelve people were killed and nine others injured after heavily armed gunmen opened fire in an informal settlement near Johannesburg, triggering a large scale police manhunt for those responsible.
The attack took place late Tuesday night at the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland East of Johannesburg. Police said a group of more than 10 suspects arrived in a white Toyota Quantum and launched coordinated shootings at multiple locations within the community before fleeing the scene.
Authorities confirmed that 11 victims died at the scene, while another later succumbed to injuries in hospital. Several of the injured are receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities as investigators work to determine the motive behind the attack.
South African police have launched an intensive search operation and deployed specialist detectives to track down the suspects. While the motive remains unclear, officials believe the shooting may be linked to criminal activity in the area.
The incident is one of the deadliest mass shootings recorded in Johannesburg this year and has renewed concerns about violent crime across South Africa. The country continues to battle high levels of gun violence, with many attacks linked to gangs, organized crime, and territorial disputes.
Police are appealing to members of the public with information about the attack to come forward as investigations continue into the deadly shooting.
