The United Kingdom is set to host a major international meeting aimed at reopening the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, following its effective closure amid escalating conflict in the region.
According to current updates, the UK government will convene representatives from more than 30 countries in a virtual summit focused on restoring safe navigation through the waterway. The talks are being led under the direction of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has emphasized the urgency and complexity of the situation.
The meeting brings together a broad coalition of nations, including European and global partners, to explore diplomatic and political solutions for reopening the strait. The waterway is one of the most critical shipping routes in the world, carrying roughly a fifth of global oil supplies, and its disruption has had immediate consequences for international trade and energy markets.
The closure follows ongoing hostilities linked to the wider conflict involving Iran, during which shipping traffic through the strait has been severely restricted. Reports indicate that numerous vessels have been affected, with attacks on ships and rising security risks making passage increasingly dangerous.
British officials say the talks will focus on practical steps to ensure freedom of navigation, including safeguarding vessels and clearing hazards such as sea mines. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper is expected to play a key role in coordinating discussions among participating countries.
Notably, the United States is not part of this particular meeting, although coordination with allies continues separately. The absence highlights differing approaches among Western nations on how best to respond to the crisis, with the UK currently prioritizing diplomatic engagement over direct military involvement.
This development marks the latest step in ongoing international efforts to address the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, with further discussions including potential military planning expected to follow after the initial diplomatic talks.
