The United Kingdom has named Peter Vowles as its new High Commissioner to Nigeria, marking a key diplomatic appointment aimed at strengthening relations between both countries.

Vowles will take over responsibilities as the UK’s top representative in Nigeria, overseeing diplomatic engagement, trade relations, and cooperation on security, development, and migration issues between both nations.

He brings extensive experience in international development and diplomacy, having previously served in senior roles within the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), including postings across Africa and Asia. His background includes work in countries such as Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, as well as leadership roles in UK overseas development programmes.

The appointment comes as Nigeria and the UK continue to deepen ties in areas such as economic partnership, education, climate cooperation, and security collaboration. Nigeria remains one of the UK’s most important partners in West Africa and a key member of the Commonwealth.

Vowles is expected to assume office in the coming months, where he will succeed the outgoing British High Commissioner and lead the UK mission in Abuja.

Officials say the appointment reflects the UK’s commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic engagement with Nigeria amid evolving global and regional challenges.
