Trump Criticises Jeanine Pirro Over Reflecting Pool Case as Rift Emerges

A rare public disagreement has emerged within the Trump administration after President Donald Trump sharply criticised U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro for dropping criminal charges in a high profile vandalism case involving the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The dispute has exposed divisions over the handling of an investigation that has become politically embarrassing for the White House.

The controversy centres on former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who was initially charged with damaging the recently renovated Reflecting Pool. However, federal prosecutors later dismissed the case after concluding that newly reviewed evidence showed the damage was caused by flaws in the pool’s multi million dollar renovation rather than acts of vandalism. Charges against three other defendants linked to the investigation were also dropped.

Speaking at the White House, Trump accused Pirro of “folding like an umbrella” under pressure, insisting he still believed vandalism was responsible for the damage. He expressed frustration over the Justice Department’s reversal, arguing that the decision undermined efforts to hold those responsible accountable. Pirro has not publicly responded to the president’s remarks, although reports suggest she defended the decision internally, saying it was based on evidence reviewed by career prosecutors.

The Reflecting Pool, which underwent a $14 million renovation ahead of national celebrations, has since been drained again after construction defects became apparent. Court filings described the refurbishment as botched, with investigators concluding that installation problems—not criminal damage were primarily responsible for the deterioration. The findings have prompted scrutiny of the renovation project and the contractor responsible for the work.

The dispute has fuelled speculation about Pirro’s future in the administration. Several U.S. media outlets report that Trump has privately discussed removing her from her post, although no official decision has been announced.
