President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the growing hardship facing millions of Nigerians, admitting that many citizens are still struggling with rising living costs and worsening insecurity across the country.
Speaking after securing support within the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 elections, Tinubu said he is fully aware of the pain Nigerians are currently experiencing. His comments come at a time when inflation, food prices, fuel costs, and insecurity remain major concerns nationwide.
Since assuming office in 2023, Tinubu’s administration has introduced major economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of the foreign exchange market. The government argues that the policies are necessary to stabilize Nigeria’s economy in the long term, but many Nigerians say the immediate effects have been harsh, with transport fares, electricity tariffs, and food prices increasing sharply.
Tinubu’s statement also comes amid growing criticism over insecurity in several parts of the country. Recent attacks in Borno, Kwara, and other northern regions have raised concerns about the government’s ability to tackle terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings effectively. Analysts say insecurity and economic hardship remain the two biggest challenges affecting public confidence in the administration.
Despite the criticism, the presidency insists that reforms are beginning to produce results. Government officials point to improving foreign reserves, slowing inflation compared to previous peaks, and projected economic growth as signs that the economy is gradually stabilizing.
Tinubu is expected to seek a second term in office after recently winning his party’s primary overwhelmingly, setting the stage for what could become another highly contested presidential election in Nigeria.
