A prominent Tanzanian musician has been charged with rape in Kenya, in a case that has drawn widespread attention across East Africa and sparked debate among fans and industry figures.
Sefu Shabani, popularly known as Matonya, appeared in court in the coastal city of Mombasa where he denied the charge, according to a statement from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The court granted the 43-year-old bail set at 500,000 Kenyan shillings and ordered him to surrender his Tanzanian passport. Prosecutors said the measure was necessary to ensure he remains within the court’s jurisdiction as the case proceeds.
According to the DPP, the alleged assault took place earlier this week at an apartment in Nyali, a popular beach destination in Mombasa. Authorities also said immigration officials have been alerted to prevent the musician from leaving the country.
Matonya has not publicly commented beyond his court plea, and Tanzanian authorities have yet to issue an official response regarding the case.
Matonya is widely known for his contribution to Bongo Flava, a genre that blends Swahili lyrics with contemporary urban beats and influences from traditional coastal music such as taarab. He rose to prominence more than a decade ago and remains a familiar figure on the East African music scene.
Some of his popular songs include Vaileti, Anita, Siamini, Taxi Bubu and Mapito, which have earned him a loyal fan base across the region.
News of the charges has generated strong reactions on social media and within Tanzania’s music industry. While some supporters have called for restraint and emphasised the importance of due process, others have highlighted the seriousness of the allegations and the need for accountability.
The case continues to unfold as legal proceedings move forward in Kenya, with regional attention focused on both the judicial process and its potential impact on one of Tanzania’s well-known musical figures.
