Election results in the Central African Republic have been delayed after a strike by key electoral staff disrupted the release of vote tallies, deepening uncertainty following a controversial electoral process.
According to officials, workers at the country’s National Electoral Authority (ANE), particularly IT specialists responsible for processing and publishing results, have refused to carry out their duties. Their action has effectively blocked the announcement of outcomes from recent polls, leaving candidates and voters in limbo.
The strike has exposed internal tensions within the electoral body, with reports suggesting grievances among staff over working conditions and administrative issues. As a result, the transmission and verification of results have stalled, further delaying an already sensitive post-election period.
The disruption comes against the backdrop of a politically charged electoral cycle. The country held general elections in December 2025, during which President Faustin-Archange Touadéra secured a third term following constitutional changes that removed presidential term limits.
Those elections were already marred by controversy, including opposition boycotts, allegations of irregularities, and concerns about transparency. The latest delay in releasing results risks reinforcing doubts about the credibility of the electoral process and could heighten political tensions in the fragile nation.
Observers warn that prolonged uncertainty over election outcomes may undermine public trust in democratic institutions, particularly in a country that has struggled with instability and conflict for years. The Central African Republic continues to face significant security and governance challenges, which have historically complicated the organisation of free and fair elections.
Authorities have yet to announce when the results will be released, and it remains unclear how quickly the dispute with striking workers can be resolved. For now, the situation underscores the vulnerability of electoral systems to internal disruptions and the broader challenges facing democratic processes in the country.
