The Senegalese government has condemned the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and called for an independent international investigation into what they describe as “suspected corruption” surrounding the tournament’s outcome.
At the heart of the crisis is one of the most disputed decisions in African football history. Senegal had originally emerged victorious in the AFCON 2025 final, defeating host nation Morocco 1–0 after extra time in a tense and chaotic match played in Rabat. However, weeks later, CAF’s Appeals Board overturned that result, ruling that Senegal had forfeited the match due to a temporary walk-off protest during stoppage time. The decision retroactively awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory—and the continental title.
The Senegalese government’s response has been swift and uncompromising. Officials rejected the ruling outright, describing it as illegitimate and deeply damaging to the integrity of African football. More significantly, the government has gone beyond sporting, formally demanding an independent probe into CAF’s decision-making processes, citing fears of bias and corruption within the organization’s leadership.
This political intervention underscores how far-reaching the controversy has become. What began as an on-field dispute over refereeing decisions—specifically a disallowed Senegal goal and a controversial penalty awarded to Morocco—quickly spiraled into chaos. Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch in protest before returning to complete the match, which they ultimately won. Despite the game being concluded and the referee allowing play to resume, CAF later determined that the walk-off violated tournament regulations.
For Senegal, that justification is not only flawed but unprecedented. Both the government and the Senegalese Football Federation argue that once a match is completed under the authority of the referee, its result should stand. They insist that CAF’s reversal undermines fundamental principles of football governance and sets a dangerous precedent for future competitions.
The situation has also triggered widespread outrage among fans, players, and analysts across Africa and beyond. Many have questioned how a completed final with a trophy presentation and official recognition of Senegal as champions could later be nullified. The perception of inconsistency in CAF’s disciplinary processes has only intensified calls for transparency and accountability.
Meanwhile, CAF has defended its decision, maintaining that its judicial bodies acted independently and within the framework of competition rules. The organization argues that Senegal’s actions during the match constituted a breach serious enough to warrant forfeiture, even after the final whistle.
As tensions rise, Senegal is preparing to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the highest authority in global sports disputes.
Beyond the legal battle, the controversy has exposed deeper issues within African football governance, ranging from regulatory inconsistencies to allegations of political influence. It has also placed CAF under intense international scrutiny at a time when the organization is seeking to elevate the global profile of African competitions.
For now, the AFCON 2025 saga remains unresolved, but one thing is clear: Senegal is not backing down. With its government now fully engaged and demanding answers, this dispute has transcended sport, evolving into a broader fight over fairness, credibility, and the future of football on the continent.
