Ghanaian rap icon Sarkodie has announced plans to headline a major concert at the The O2 Arena in London, positioning himself to become the first African rapper to stage his own headline rap concert at the iconic venue.
The planned show will be part of the internationally recognized Rapperholic concert series, an annual event founded by Sarkodie that has grown into one of Ghana’s most influential music platforms. Scheduled for March 6, 2027, the concert will take place at the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena, one of Europe’s largest and most prestigious indoor entertainment venues.
Sarkodie revealed the ambitious plan during his sold-out Rapperholic UK performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall, where he delivered a historic show to celebrate Ghana’s Independence Day on March 6, 2026. The performance marked the first time a Ghanaian artist sold out the legendary venue for the Rapperholic concert, highlighting the rapper’s expanding international influence and the growing demand for African music abroad.
Born Michael Owusu Addo, Sarkodie has long been regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished rap artists. Since emerging in the late 2000s, he has built a reputation for his rapid-fire lyrical delivery, often rapping in Twi while blending hip-hop with Afrobeats influences. Over the years, he has collaborated with international artists including T-Pain, Ludacris, and Busta Rhymes, helping expand his audience beyond West Africa.
The Rapperholic brand itself has evolved dramatically since its launch in 2012. Originally created as a fan-focused concert in Accra, the event quickly became one of the most anticipated shows in Ghana’s music calendar. Each edition brings together some of the biggest names in African music, transforming the concert into a cultural celebration of hip-hop and Afrobeats. Over time, the platform has expanded beyond Ghana, reflecting Sarkodie’s ambition to showcase African music on the world stage.
By announcing a headline show at the O2 Arena, Sarkodie is attempting to achieve what few African rappers have accomplished. The venue has hosted global superstars across multiple genres, including major Afrobeats artists such as Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and Asake, who have all delivered sold-out performances there in recent years.
However, Sarkodie’s planned show is particularly significant because it focuses heavily on rap, a genre that has historically faced challenges in achieving the same commercial scale as Afrobeats concerts in large arenas.
The announcement has generated widespread discussion within the African entertainment community. While many fans and industry observers view the move as a bold step for Ghanaian music, others have questioned whether the rapper can fill a venue of such scale. Some commentators argue that the diaspora audience will play a crucial role in determining the event’s success.
Despite the debate, Sarkodie’s supporters believe his long track record of successful concerts and loyal fan base will drive strong turnout. The rapper has previously sold out notable venues including the Apollo Theater in New York and O2 Indigo in London, achievements that demonstrate his international appeal.
For Sarkodie, the upcoming O2 Arena concert represents more than just another performance, it symbolizes the global rise of African hip-hop. As Afrobeats continues to dominate international charts, African rap artists are increasingly seeking opportunities to showcase their artistry on the same massive stages.
If successful, the Rapperholic 2027 concert could mark a defining moment not only in Sarkodie’s career but also for Ghanaian music as a whole. It would reinforce the idea that African rap can command global arenas and further cement Sarkodie’s legacy as one of the continent’s most influential hip-hop pioneers.
