Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez is reportedly set to join Serie A side Como on loan after the two clubs reached a verbal agreement over the Spanish goalkeeper’s move. The deal would give Sánchez an opportunity to revive his career in Italy after his position at Stamford Bridge became uncertain following Chelsea’s arrival of Emiliano Martínez.
Sánchez’s future changed quickly after Chelsea completed the signing of Martínez from Aston Villa. The Argentine goalkeeper joined on a three-year contract and immediately strengthened Chelsea’s options between the posts, leaving Sánchez facing increased competition for regular first-team football.
The 28-year-old had started Chelsea’s opening Premier League match of the season but came under criticism following the team’s 3-2 victory over Fulham. His performances subsequently contributed to growing uncertainty over his place in the squad, with the club moving to bring in the more experienced Martínez.
A move to Como could offer Sánchez the chance to regain confidence and play consistently. Reports indicate that the proposed deal is a season-long loan, with the remaining formalities expected to be completed before the transfer window closes.
The move would also reunite Sánchez with a club that already has links to Chelsea. Como have strengthened their squad with Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah this summer, while former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fàbregas is the Italian club’s head coach.
Sánchez joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2023 after establishing himself as a Premier League goalkeeper. Chelsea initially handed him a seven-year contract, highlighting the club’s belief in his ability at the time.
For Sánchez, a move to Serie A could therefore represent a fresh start rather than simply an exit from Chelsea. Regular football at Como would give him an opportunity to rebuild his confidence, while Chelsea would allow Martínez to take control of the goalkeeping position as the club continues reshaping its squad under Xabi Alonso.
