RAF Fairford Bomb Plot: Police Probe Possible Iran Link as Five Remain in Custody

Counter terrorism police in the UK are investigating a suspected bomb plot near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, with five men in custody and authorities examining whether the incident could be linked to Iran. The men were arrested after police received a report shortly after midnight about three suspicious vehicles travelling towards the Royal Air Force base. They were initially detained over suspected offences under the Explosives Act before being further arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act.

Police have said the five men can be held without charge for up to 14 days under terrorism legislation. If no charges are brought earlier, that period could run until October 11. The investigation has also led to the evacuation of residents from around 85 homes in the nearby village of Whelford, while a specialist Army explosive ordnance disposal team examined three vehicles at the scene.

Sky News defence and security editor Deborah Haynes said there are indications that security services may have been monitoring the suspected plot before the arrests took place. She reported that the threat level around RAF Fairford had reportedly been raised following a specific warning several hours before the arrests. US President Donald Trump has also suggested that British and American authorities had been monitoring the suspects for some time, although the precise details of the investigation remain confidential. RAF Fairford is used by the US Air Force and has hosted American bomber aircraft. Its location and military role have made the base an important focus of the investigation.

The possibility of an Iranian connection is being examined against the backdrop of the wider conflict involving Iran and the United States. However, authorities have not publicly concluded that Iran was responsible for the suspected operation. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the incident as “deeply concerning” and urged people not to speculate while investigators establish the facts. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting also said he was in contact with his US counterpart, Pete Hegseth, and praised the emergency and security services involved in the response.

US President Donald Trump described the arrests as “fantastic” and said cooperation between Washington and London had worked well. Meanwhile, police have maintained a cordon around the area as investigations continue. Residents who cannot yet return home are being supported with temporary accommodation arrangements. The five suspects remain in custody as counter terrorism investigators work to establish their identities, possible connections and alleged motives. Authorities have urged the public to allow the investigation to take its course and avoid speculation while the facts are being established.
