Whitbread, the owner of Premier Inn, has announced plans to cut approximately 3,800 jobs across the UK and Ireland, representing more than 12% of its regional workforce, as part of a sweeping restructuring driven by rising costs and shifting business priorities.
The job cuts form part of a new five-year strategy aimed at reducing expenses and refocusing the company on its core hotel operations. The reductions will primarily affect staff working in the group’s restaurant brands, including Beefeater and Brewers Fayre, which are commonly located alongside Premier Inn hotels.
Whitbread said the move was prompted by “significant cost increases,” particularly higher business rates and employer national insurance contributions, as well as persistent inflationary pressures. These financial challenges have weighed heavily on the hospitality sector, forcing companies to rethink operations amid tighter margins and changing consumer behavior.
As part of the overhaul, Whitbread plans to close or convert its remaining standalone restaurants into integrated food and beverage services within its hotels. The company said this model better reflects customer preferences and offers improved profitability.
The restructuring also includes a substantial property strategy shift. Whitbread intends to sell and lease back around £1.5 billion worth of real estate assets, freeing up capital to reinvest in its hotel business and future growth.
Despite the scale of the cuts, the company emphasized that the proposals are subject to consultation and that efforts will be made to redeploy affected employees where possible. Whitbread noted it hires around 15,000 people annually and expects to retain a “significant proportion” of impacted staff.
Industry analysts say the decision highlights the mounting pressures facing UK hospitality firms, particularly as operating costs rise and traditional dining formats struggle to remain profitable. The shift toward a more hotel-centric model reflects broader trends in the sector, where companies are streamlining services and focusing on higher-margin operations.
Whitbread, the UK’s largest hotel operator, runs more than 800 Premier Inn locations and derives a significant portion of its earnings from the brand. The latest move signals a decisive pivot toward consolidating that dominance, even as it comes at the cost of thousands of jobs and the downsizing of its long-standing restaurant businesses.
The company said consultations with employees will begin immediately, with further details expected as the restructuring process unfolds.
