The Portuguese Football Federation has moved to calm the growing controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus, insisting that the relationship between the two remains strong and that Ronaldo’s place in the national team is not under immediate threat. FPF president Pedro Proença said the situation should be handled internally as the federation looks to put the dispute behind the team.

The controversy began after Ronaldo unexpectedly left Portugal’s training camp ahead of the Nations League match against Denmark. The 41-year-old had been an unused substitute during Portugal’s victory over Norway and was subsequently told he would not start against Denmark. Ronaldo then spoke with Proença before deciding to leave the camp, later saying he would explain his reasons “in due course.”

Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, had earlier stressed that selection decisions would be based on performance rather than reputation. Ronaldo’s status as one of Portugal’s greatest players, however, has remained central to the debate. He is the country’s most-capped player and holds the men’s international scoring record with 146 goals in 234 appearances.

Despite Ronaldo’s absence, Portugal have continued their strong Nations League campaign. They defeated Denmark 4-2 before beating Norway 2-1 on Sunday, with João Cancelo and Gonçalo Ramos scoring in the latter match. The result secured Portugal’s place in the quarter-finals and maintained their perfect record in Group A4.

Following the victory over Norway, Jesus softened his tone on the dispute and said Ronaldo could return whenever he wanted if he remained active and wished to represent Portugal. He described the situation as a misunderstanding and said, from his perspective, it was something that could be resolved.

Proença has similarly indicated that the federation wants the matter settled through conversation rather than played out publicly. The FPF president said Ronaldo remains in the national team on sporting merit and emphasised the importance of his contribution to Portuguese football.

Ronaldo’s future with Portugal therefore remains uncertain, but there has been no indication from the federation or Jesus that the door has been closed. Portugal’s next Nations League fixtures are scheduled for November, giving the player, coach and federation time to resolve their differences before the next squad is selected.
