South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended national police commissioner Fannie Masemola following serious corruption allegations connected to a high-value government contract, authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The suspension, described by the presidency as a precautionary measure, comes amid an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the awarding of a multimillion-rand health services tender within the South African Police Service. Officials say the move is intended to protect the integrity of the probe and ensure that due process is followed without interference.
Masemola is accused of breaching public finance regulations during the procurement process. Investigators are examining whether proper procedures were ignored and whether the contract involved fraudulent dealings or undue benefit to private entities. He is among several senior officials reportedly under scrutiny in connection with the case.
In a brief statement, Ramaphosa’s office said an acting commissioner would take over leadership of the police service while investigations continue. The presidency emphasized its commitment to accountability and transparency within state institutions, particularly in law enforcement agencies that play a critical role in maintaining public trust.
The case forms part of broader efforts to address alleged corruption within South Africa’s policing structures. Ongoing inquiries have raised concerns about systemic weaknesses, including claims of misconduct and links between some officers and criminal networks.
Masemola has not publicly commented in detail on the allegations but is expected to contest any charges brought against him. Legal proceedings and internal disciplinary processes are likely to unfold in the coming weeks.
The development adds to mounting pressure on the government to tackle corruption at senior levels and restore confidence in public institutions. Observers say the outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for policing reforms in South Africa.
