Manny Pacquiao has firmly rejected claims that his highly anticipated rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be an exhibition, insisting that the fight is a fully sanctioned professional bout that must count on both fighters’ records. The Filipino boxing legend made his position clear in a recent interview, pushing back against Mayweather’s suggestion that the event should be treated as entertainment rather than a competitive contest.
The rematch, which has already generated global attention and debate, was initially announced as a professional fight expected to take place in Las Vegas and streamed on Netflix. However, uncertainty emerged after Mayweather publicly referred to it as an exhibition, stating that the event is intended for entertainment rather than competition and should not affect either fighter’s undefeated or career records.
Pacquiao, however, has taken a strong opposing stance, arguing that both camps agreed to a legitimate fight and that changing its status now undermines the agreement. His team insists that contracts signed for the bout clearly define it as a professional contest, not an exhibition, and have warned that any attempt to alter its terms could lead to serious disputes.
The disagreement has reignited tensions between the two boxing icons more than a decade after their first historic meeting in 2015, a fight that remains one of the most commercially successful events in boxing history. That bout saw Mayweather defeat Pacquiao by unanimous decision in a contest that, despite massive global hype, drew criticism for its cautious pace and lack of action compared to expectations.
Now, as both fighters return in their late 40s, the stakes are different but the attention remains just as intense. Pacquiao, who returned to competitive action in recent years after periods of retirement, has made it clear he still sees himself as a legitimate world-class competitor capable of fighting at the highest level. Mayweather, on the other hand, has continued to participate in exhibition matches since his retirement from professional boxing in 2017, further fueling debate about how seriously his return should be taken.
The core issue now dividing both camps is the definition of the bout itself. In boxing, exhibition fights are typically non-scoring events designed for entertainment, often with modified rules and no impact on professional records. Pacquiao’s insistence that this rematch must be official reflects his desire for competitive legitimacy, while Mayweather’s stance suggests a more entertainment-driven spectacle.
As negotiations and public statements continue, some fans see the potential rematch as a nostalgic blockbuster that should simply be enjoyed regardless of its classification, while others argue that turning such a high-profile event into an exhibition would diminish its historical significance.
For now, the status of the fight remains unresolved, with both legends holding firm to opposing interpretations.
