The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have warned that they may embark on a nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to urgently address the worsening insecurity across the country, saying Nigerians are increasingly unable to travel, work, or live safely.

The labour unions issued the warning during a joint briefing, stating that the rising wave of terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, and violent attacks has made daily life dangerous for workers and ordinary citizens. They said insecurity is now affecting productivity, livelihoods, and access to essential services nationwide.

According to the unions, many Nigerians are now living in fear, with communities across several states repeatedly targeted by armed groups. They argued that government responses so far have not been sufficient to reverse the situation, despite repeated calls for stronger action.

The labour leaders said the worsening security crisis has reached a point where organised labour may have no choice but to consider industrial action if urgent steps are not taken. They stressed that workers deserve protection and must be able to carry out their duties without fear of attack or abduction.

They also linked the insecurity to broader socio economic challenges, warning that continued violence is deepening poverty, disrupting businesses, and worsening national instability.

The unions called on the Federal Government to prioritise the safety of citizens and take decisive action against criminal groups operating across the country, insisting that failure to do so could trigger a nationwide shutdown with far reaching consequences.
