A private jet carrying nine people has crashed into a residential neighbourhood in South Florida, killing everyone on board and triggering a massive explosion that sent flames and thick black smoke into the sky. The incident occurred on Sunday, November 1, in Palm Beach County, near a busy roadway, with dramatic footage capturing the aircraft plunging towards the ground before erupting into a fireball.

The aircraft, identified as a Learjet 60, had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was travelling to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. According to US transportation officials, the crash happened at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard had died, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said there were no immediate reports of casualties on the ground. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

Preliminary information indicates that the aircraft encountered difficult weather conditions shortly before the crash. Air traffic control recordings cited by the Associated Press indicate that the pilots reported icing and moderate turbulence while flying at around 35,000 feet. The crew requested a higher altitude before declaring an emergency as the aircraft began losing altitude rapidly. One of the final distress communications reportedly described an extreme descent, followed by the pilot warning that the aircraft was going to crash. However, investigators have not established whether the weather conditions caused the accident.

The crash occurred near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North in the Greenacres area of Palm Beach County. The aircraft appeared to narrowly miss nearby homes before striking close to the road, leaving a large crater and scattering debris across the area. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, while authorities closed surrounding roads and evacuated approximately 600 people from a nearby mobile home community as a precaution. There were also reports of electricity disruptions in the neighbourhood.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation to determine what led to the disaster. Investigators are expected to examine the wreckage, flight data, weather conditions, maintenance records and communications between the pilots and air traffic controllers. The aircraft manufacturer, Bombardier, has also expressed condolences and said it would cooperate with the investigation.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the dangers of severe weather during aviation operations and the importance of understanding how aircraft respond to icing and turbulence at high altitudes. While the reported conditions have become a focus of early investigations, authorities have cautioned against drawing conclusions before the evidence is examined. For now, the priority remains identifying the victims and establishing exactly what happened during the aircraft’s final moments.
