Nigeria has appointed former NBA coach David Fizdale as the new head coach of the national men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, in a major move aimed at restoring the country’s status among Africa’s basketball elite.

The appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), which said Fizdale will lead the team through upcoming qualification campaigns for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Fizdale arrives with more than two decades of NBA coaching experience, having previously served as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies and the New York Knicks. He was also part of the Miami Heat coaching staff that won back-to-back NBA championships in 2012 and 2013 before later working with the Phoenix Suns as an assistant coach.

Speaking after his appointment, the 51-year-old described the opportunity as both exciting and deeply personal. Fizdale revealed that former D’Tigers coach Mike Brown played a major role in convincing him to accept the job.

“I’m super excited,” Fizdale said. “Mike Brown brought the opportunity to me, and after several conversations, we agreed that I would try to help the team qualify.”

Fizdale also said one of his biggest motivations is helping Nigeria qualify for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, his hometown. He added that leading the team to a medal-winning performance on such a stage would be a career-defining achievement.

The appointment comes at a crucial moment for Nigerian basketball. D’Tigers currently face a difficult road in the African qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA World Cup after managing just one win from their opening three games against Tunisia, Rwanda, and Guinea.

Once regarded as one of Africa’s fastest-rising basketball nations, Nigeria made global headlines in 2021 after defeating the United States in a pre-Olympic exhibition game in Las Vegas — the first time an African team had beaten Team USA in basketball.

The federation believes Fizdale’s NBA pedigree and leadership experience can help return the national team to international prominence. NBBF officials say his appointment is part of a broader long-term strategy to improve coaching standards, strengthen player development, and establish Nigeria as a consistent force in global basketball.

Fizdale becomes the seventh foreign coach to lead D’Tigers. His immediate focus will be preparing the team for the next phase of World Cup qualification, with hopes of eventually returning Nigeria to the Olympic stage for a fourth appearance.
