Nearly 160 Migrants Rescued After Boat Catches Fire in English Channel

A major search and rescue operation was launched in the English Channel after a migrant boat carrying nearly 160 people caught fire during an attempted crossing from France to the UK. French and British rescue teams worked together to evacuate everyone on board, with authorities confirming that all passengers were safely rescued.

The incident occurred in French search and rescue waters near the coast of Boulogne sur Mer after the vessel’s engine reportedly caught fire. According to French officials, many of those on board entered the water as flames spread through the overcrowded inflatable boat. Rescue ships, helicopters and lifeboat crews from both countries responded swiftly, preventing what could have become a major tragedy.

French authorities said 157 migrants were rescued from the burning vessel, while five others had been brought ashore earlier after initially requesting assistance. All those rescued were transported to Boulogne sur Mer, where they received medical checks and emergency support. No fatalities were reported, although officials described the situation as extremely dangerous.

The fire has once again highlighted the risks faced by migrants attempting to cross one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes in overcrowded inflatable boats operated by people smuggling gangs. Authorities noted that migrants often refuse rescue unless their lives are in immediate danger because they fear being returned to France before reaching the UK.

The incident comes amid continuing efforts by Britain and France to curb irregular Channel crossings through increased patrols, intelligence sharing and measures targeting organised smuggling networks. Despite those efforts, hundreds of migrants continue to attempt the dangerous journey each week, with several fatal incidents recorded this year.

The latest rescue underscores the growing humanitarian and security challenges in the English Channel. While emergency responders prevented a loss of life on this occasion, officials on both sides of the Channel have warned that overcrowded boats, poor weather and unsafe conditions continue to put migrants at grave risk, reinforcing calls for stronger action against criminal trafficking networks and safer migration solutions.
