The football world is in mourning following the sudden passing of legendary manager Mircea Lucescu, who died just days after resigning from his position, bringing an emotional close to a career that spanned decades.

Lucescu had stepped down on Thursday after falling ill ahead of a training session and was later hospitalised, where he reportedly suffered a heart attack the following morning. His death has come as a shock, particularly given how recently he was still actively managing. His final outing on the touchline ended in a narrow 1-0 play-off loss to Turkey on March 26, a result that denied Romania a place at the 2026 World Cup.

In a statement, the Romanian Football Federation paid tribute to him as an enduring legend, describing him as not only an exceptional tactician but also a mentor, visionary, and national icon. Its president, Razvan Burleanu, called his passing a tragic moment for both Romania and global football, emphasizing the profound impact Lucescu had on generations of players.

Across a managerial career that began 47 years ago, Lucescu built an impressive legacy, leading both club and country with distinction. He managed the Romanian national team between 1981 and 1986 before returning for another stint in 2024. At club level, he took charge of top sides including Inter Milan, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Shakhtar Donetsk, Zenit St Petersburg, and Dynamo Kyiv, earning multiple titles and continental honours along the way.

Clubs he once managed have also expressed their grief. Galatasaray remembered him for his success and lasting influence, while Inter Milan shared heartfelt condolences with his family and loved ones.

Before his coaching career, Lucescu also made his mark as a player, earning 64 caps for Romania and captaining the national team at the 1970 FIFA World Cup. His lifelong dedication to football leaves behind a powerful legacy defined by leadership, knowledge, and an enduring passion for the game.
