Rail passengers travelling over the Easter period are being warned of widespread disruption as major engineering works bring services to and from one of the capital’s busiest stations to a near standstill.

There will be almost no trains operating to or from London Euston station between Good Friday and 8 April, as Network Rail carries out extensive upgrades. During this period, long-distance services run by Avanti West Coast will terminate at Milton Keynes Central instead of continuing into London.

Passengers heading to the capital will need to complete their journeys using replacement bus services between Milton Keynes and Bedford railway station, where onward connections to London St Pancras station will be available.

The disruption is part of a major infrastructure programme that includes the replacement of a significant railway bridge, signalling upgrades and track renewals. Officials say the Easter bank holiday provides a rare window to carry out such large-scale work with reduced passenger impact.

Jake Kelly of Network Rail said the holiday period is strategically chosen because it is typically one of the quieter times on the railway. However, he urged travellers to plan ahead and check their journeys before setting out.

While most services will be affected, a limited number of trains on the London Overground Lioness Line will still operate from Euston on Good Friday and Easter Monday, offering some relief to commuters.

Disruption will not be limited to Euston. Elsewhere, services between London Waterloo station and Clapham Junction station will run on a reduced schedule due to maintenance work on track components.

On the Underground network, the Hammersmith & City line will be completely suspended throughout the Easter weekend. The Bakerloo line will also face partial disruption, with no service between Stonebridge Park station and Harrow & Wealdstone station.

Meanwhile, passengers using the Docklands Light Railway will encounter closures between Bank station and Tower Gateway station, as well as between Poplar DLR station and West India Quay station for the duration of the works.

Transport officials say the upgrades are essential to improving reliability and capacity across the network, but have acknowledged the inconvenience for passengers. Travellers are being strongly advised to check routes in advance and allow extra time for their journeys during the holiday period.
