Argentina football star Lionel Messi has returned to his hometown of Rosario to say a final farewell to his father Jorge Messi, who died aged 68 after a prolonged illness. Messi and his family travelled from Miami to Argentina on a private aircraft before being escorted by a police motorcade to a cemetery in Rosario, where a private funeral ceremony was held. The service was attended by close family members and a small group of friends and former Argentina teammates.
Jorge Messi was more than the footballer’s father. He was also his longtime agent and played a central role in managing his son’s career from the early stages of his development. Jorge supported Messi’s move to Spain as a teenager and remained closely involved in his professional affairs throughout his extraordinary career.
The funeral took place in the city where Messi was born and spent his early childhood. Rosario has remained an important part of the player’s life despite his long career abroad, and the city has continued to celebrate his achievements with murals and other tributes. Jorge Messi’s death was reported after he had battled a prolonged illness. His passing prompted messages of condolence from across the football world, with Argentine football authorities and former teammates recognising the important role he played behind the scenes in his son’s career.
Messi’s relationship with his father was closely connected to his rise from a young player in Rosario to one of the most successful footballers in history. Jorge was involved in his son’s career from a young age and later became his representative, helping guide major decisions throughout Messi’s professional journey.
The private nature of the funeral reflected the family’s wish to mourn away from public attention. Supporters gathered in Rosario to pay their respects, while images of the city’s famous Messi murals and landmarks underscored the deep connection between the football icon and his birthplace.
Jorge Messi’s death marks a deeply personal moment for Lionel Messi, whose football career has been accompanied throughout the years by the support and guidance of his father. As the family mourns his loss, tributes continue to arrive from supporters and members of the international football community.
