Liam Delap Leaves Chelsea for £50m Nottingham Forest Move After Difficult First Season at Stamford Bridge

Liam Delap has completed a move from Chelsea to Nottingham Forest for a reported £50 million, ending a challenging spell at Stamford Bridge after just one season. The 23-year-old striker has signed a five-year contract with Forest as he looks to revive his career and rediscover the form that made him one of England’s most promising young forwards.

Delap joined Chelsea after an impressive 2024-25 campaign with Ipswich Town, where he scored 12 Premier League goals despite playing for a team that won only four league matches and was eventually relegated. Chelsea paid around £30 million to sign him, with the club believing his strength, movement and finishing could develop further at the highest level.

His Chelsea spell, however, proved considerably more difficult. Delap made 47 appearances across all competitions and scored only once in the Premier League. He did produce a memorable moment in the Champions League, scoring his first goal in the competition during Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Barcelona.

One of the reasons behind Chelsea’s decision to sign Delap was his previous relationship with Enzo Maresca. The Italian coach had been Manchester City’s Under-21 manager when Delap enjoyed an outstanding academy campaign in 2020-21, scoring 24 goals in 20 matches as City won the Premier League 2 title. That familiarity was believed to have played a role in Chelsea’s decision to bring him to London.

However, Maresca’s departure meant Delap had to adapt to another managerial change, adding to the difficulties he experienced. Injuries to his hamstring and shoulder also disrupted his progress, while adjusting to Chelsea’s tactical demands proved challenging.

Delap’s decision to make himself available for Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign last summer also meant he missed England’s successful Under-21 European Championship campaign. The tournament ended with England lifting the trophy, making his decision another notable part of his difficult first year at Chelsea.

Now, Forest are hoping to benefit from the potential that initially made Delap such a highly rated prospect. The £50 million fee represents a significant investment, but his previous Premier League campaign at Ipswich demonstrated that he can score goals and lead an attack when given responsibility.
