Labour Regains Poll Lead as Burnham’s Government Gains Early Momentum

The Labour Party has moved ahead of Reform UK in national opinion polls for the first time in more than a year, giving Prime Minister Andy Burnham an early political boost just weeks after taking office. The latest polling suggests Burnham’s first policy announcements have helped Labour recover support, while Reform UK has been hit by a series of controversies surrounding leader Nigel Farage.

According to the Financial Times poll tracker, Labour is now polling at 25%, narrowly ahead of Reform UK on 24%. Analysts attribute the shift to Burnham’s strong start in government, including measures aimed at easing the cost of living crisis such as a £2 cap on most bus fares, lower business rates for pubs and live music venues, and proposals to reduce household energy costs. The new prime minister has also sought to project a more inclusive style of leadership by inviting opposition parties to work with the government on long-term reforms, including social care.

In contrast, Reform UK has faced growing political pressure as Farage continues to battle scrutiny over his financial affairs. Reports concerning undeclared gifts and donations, along with other investigations into the party’s finances, have weighed on Reform’s popularity and provided Labour with an opportunity to regain ground. Farage has denied wrongdoing, but the controversies have dominated political debate in recent weeks.

Despite Labour’s improved position, political observers caution that Burnham’s honeymoon period may be short lived. The government is expected to face difficult decisions on public spending, economic growth and public service reform, and its popularity will ultimately depend on whether it can deliver on its campaign promises. Polling experts also note that the gap between Labour and Reform remains narrow, meaning voter support could shift again as policies begin to take effect.

The latest figures suggest Britain’s political landscape remains highly competitive. While Labour has regained the initiative under Burnham’s leadership, Reform UK continues to command significant public support, setting the stage for an intense political contest in the months ahead as both parties seek to convince voters they offer the best path forward for the country.
