Kim Jong Un has been re-elected as president of the State Affairs Commission in North Korea, marking his third consecutive term at the helm of the country’s highest policy guidance body since the commission was established in 2016.
According to state media, the Supreme People’s Assembly made the decision during the first session of the 15th term held on Sunday.
The reappointment follows the country’s parliamentary elections held earlier in March 2026, where all 687 seats in the assembly were filled in a tightly controlled process with near-total voter turnout and overwhelming approval for state-backed candidates.
The latest assembly session in Pyongyang not only confirmed Kim’s leadership but also focused on broader state matters, including potential constitutional revisions and the review of a national economic five-year plan. The Korean Central News Agency did not disclose specific details of these discussions.
Kim’s re-election also follows his recent reaffirmation as general secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party, further consolidating his authority across both party and state institutions. Together, these roles ensure centralized control over governance, the military, and national policy direction. His leadership continues a dynastic legacy that has defined North Korean politics for decades, reinforcing stability within the regime while limiting political pluralism.
As North Korea moves forward, the reappointment signals continuity rather than change. While the country faces economic challenges and international sanctions, Kim’s renewed mandate underscores a commitment to his existing policies—combining internal control, military development, and cautious engagement with the global stage.
