Buckingham Palace and U.S. authorities are reviewing security arrangements for King Charles III’s upcoming state visit to the United States following a shooting incident at a high-profile dinner attended by political figures, including Donald Trump.
The incident occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, D.C., where shots were fired inside the venue, causing panic among guests and prompting an emergency response from security personnel. Law enforcement officials said the suspect was swiftly detained at the scene, and although an officer was injured, protective gear prevented serious harm. No deaths were reported.
The proximity of the attack to senior political figures has raised fresh concerns over the safety of major diplomatic and public events in the U.S., particularly those involving international guests.
In response, Buckingham Palace confirmed that discussions had taken place with U.S. officials regarding security preparations for the King’s planned visit. The Palace said the state visit would proceed as scheduled but acknowledged that adjustments to operational security measures were being considered.
Officials on both sides of the Atlantic have reportedly been coordinating closely since the incident, reviewing protection plans for venues, transport routes, and public appearances. While details remain limited for security reasons, the emphasis has been placed on ensuring the visit can continue without disruption.
The King and Queen Camilla are expected to carry out a four-day programme in the U.S., with engagements aimed at reinforcing diplomatic ties between the two countries. Despite the heightened security concerns, officials have stressed that there is no indication the visit itself is at risk of cancellation.
The shooting has also renewed debate in the U.S. over security protocols at large political gatherings, particularly those involving prominent domestic and foreign figures. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the attack.
As preparations continue, both governments have reiterated their commitment to maintaining the schedule of the royal visit while ensuring enhanced security measures are in place.
