Plans that could see the closure of the Time Capsule ice rink in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, have been put on hold for now, after council officers recommended the facility be shut down and replaced with alternative leisure uses, including a play area and padel courts.

The proposal, brought forward within a report to the communities committee of North Lanarkshire Council, suggested that repurposing the site could help increase visitor numbers and improve the long-term financial sustainability of the wider Time Capsule leisure complex.

However, councillors have decided that no immediate decision will be taken next week, instead allowing time to review the plans and consider feedback from local users, sports groups, and residents who have raised strong objections to the potential closure.

The recommendation has sparked significant backlash from the local skating and ice hockey communities, who say the rink plays a vital role in grassroots sport and youth development in the area. Programs currently hosted at the facility include early years skating lessons, a junior figure skating academy, and several youth ice hockey teams.

Coaches and club representatives have warned that shutting the rink could have lasting consequences. Some have suggested it may force young athletes to leave their sports entirely, as alternative facilities are limited in the region. A petition opposing the proposed changes has already gathered several thousand signatures, reflecting growing public concern.

Among those speaking out is Rhiannon Scott, a coach with the Starlight Synchro skating club, who described the rink as a unique community asset that cannot easily be replaced. Similarly, Martyn King, who coaches the Lanarkshire Lightning youth ice hockey team, warned that closure would be devastating for dozens of young players who rely on the facility for training and competition.

Councillor Geraldine Woods, communities convener for North Lanarkshire Council, said the proposals were part of a wider effort to review and improve services at the Time Capsule site. She stressed that elected members would be given adequate time to consider all information and hear from affected groups before reaching any final decision.

For now, the future of the Time Capsule ice rink remains uncertain, with supporters of the facility hoping that councillors will reconsider the recommendation and preserve what many describe as a vital part of local sporting life.
