For many artists, the journey to success often means leaving home in search of opportunity. For Queen Izzy, it meant doing the opposite.
The Nigerian-American rapper made the bold decision to leave North Carolina and relocate to Lagos, right at the heart of Africa’s most vibrant music industry to pursue her dreams fully. It was not an easy choice. The move surprised many people around her, including her parents, who had worked hard to build a stable life for their children in the United States.
But Queen Izzy saw something bigger. She believed that returning to Nigeria would place her closer to the culture, the energy, and the creative ecosystem that could truly shape her sound. And since arriving in Lagos, the experience has been both humbling and inspiring.
“Lagos is the home of hustlers,” she shared during her recent appearance on Afrobeats Radar on Cosoro Radio. Surrounded by relentless creativity and ambition, the city has pushed her to grow as an artist while constantly reminding her why she made the leap in the first place.
That leap of faith is reflected in her EP ‘Igba Otun (New Era), a project that marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in her career. Recorded mostly in her home studio setup in Lagos, the project came together naturally through everyday creativity and experimentation.
The EP captures the many sides of Queen Izzy, from confident rap flows to emotionally driven storytelling while giving listeners a glimpse into her evolving identity as an artist finding her place in Nigeria’s music scene.
One of the standout moments in her journey so far has been working with veteran Nigerian rapper Vector, a collaboration that came together organically. Queen Izzy describes Vector as a big brother figure who has been supportive of her music from the beginning. When he first heard the song they worked on together, the response was immediate, he recorded and sent his verse that same night.
For her, the collaboration was more than just a feature. It was validation from one of Nigeria’s most respected lyricists that her craft was being taken seriously.
Nigeria’s rap scene has produced powerful female voices in the past, but the space has been relatively quiet in recent years. Queen Izzy hopes to help bring that energy back. Rather than feeling pressure to compete with the dominance of Afrobeats, she believes there is room for every artist to shine.
For Queen Izzy, the mission isn’t just to succeed individually, it’s to expand the lane for women who want to rap, experiment, and express themselves authentically.
Speaking on her recent single “Honored at Home”, she noted that the record was inspired by the weight of global events and personal reflection. Watching the world navigate uncertainty pushed her to think about purpose, legacy, and faith.
Through the song, she expresses a simple hope that the work she does on earth will ultimately be honored in heaven. It’s a reminder that beneath the confident persona and energetic flows, Queen Izzy remains deeply introspective about the impact of her art.
With New Era already out and new singles lined up throughout the year, Queen Izzy is entering a period of intense momentum.
Her focus for the coming months is simple: visibility. More music, more visuals, more performances, and more opportunities for listeners to connect with her voice.
As an independent artist navigating a fast-moving industry, the road ahead will certainly come with challenges. But if her journey from North Carolina to Lagos proves anything, it’s that Queen Izzy isn’t afraid to take bold risks in pursuit of her vision.
And in a scene ready for new voices and fearless perspectives, she may just be one of the artists redefining what female rap looks like in Nigeria today.
