Former Conservative minister and broadcaster Ann Widdecombe has died at the age of 78, bringing to an end a political career that spanned decades and made her one of Britain’s most recognisable public figures.
Widdecombe served as a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1987 to 2010, holding several ministerial positions, including roles at the Home Office and the Department for Employment. Known for her outspoken views and distinctive style, she became one of the party’s most prominent voices on issues such as criminal justice, immigration and social policy.
After leaving Parliament, Widdecombe remained active in public life through television, journalism and political commentary. She appeared on programmes including Strictly Come Dancing and later returned to frontline politics by serving as a Member of the European Parliament for the Brexit Party from 2019 to 2020.
Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with colleagues describing her as a principled politician who never shied away from expressing her beliefs, even when they proved controversial. Many also praised her wit, determination and long standing commitment to public service.
