Residents living near the Tata Steel plant in Port Talbot, South Wales, have been urged to remain indoors after a fire broke out at the industrial site, sending large plumes of smoke into the night sky and prompting a major emergency response.
The blaze started around 20:00 BST on one of the plant’s processing lines, according to Tata Steel, which confirmed that all staff were safely evacuated before emergency services arrived. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident and continued efforts to bring the fire under control.
South Wales Police said officers remain at the scene alongside fire crews, coordinating safety measures and managing access to the area. Residents in nearby communities were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke, while motorists were warned to avoid the area where possible.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as intense, with thick smoke reducing visibility across parts of Port Talbot. One motorist, Kellie Evans, said the atmosphere looked “very apocalyptic,” adding that drivers were forced to pull over as the sky turned dark and visibility dropped.
Tata Steel clarified that the fire is not connected to a controlled demolition carried out at a nearby gas holder the previous night. The company also praised emergency responders and staff for their swift action during the incident.
While the nearby M4 motorway remains open, traffic in the area has been heavily affected, with congestion reported on approach routes as emergency operations continue.
