The 2019 film Fighting with My Family is being adapted into a stage musical, producers have confirmed, bringing the true story of British wrestler Saraya Knight to a new audience.
The original film, starring Florence Pugh and Dwayne Johnson, followed Knight’s journey from a wrestling family in the UK to international fame in WWE, where she competed under the name Paige.
Johnson, whose production company is involved in the stage version, said the story “feels exceptionally well suited for the stage.” He also described working on the film with director Stephen Merchant as a “truly special experience,” adding that the filmmaker’s work “deserves this new act.”
The film was inspired by the 2012 documentary The Wrestlers: Fighting with My Family, which followed Knight and her family, all of whom are professional wrestlers. Her father, Patrick Knight, and mother, Julia Knight, both built careers in the ring, forming the foundation of the story’s focus on family and community.
The musical is being developed by Tilted Musicals, led by songwriter Miranda Cooper and producer Sam Hodges. Cooper said the production is intended to appeal beyond wrestling fans, highlighting universal themes.
“Wrestling is so theatrical,” she said, noting its clear heroes and villains and emphasis on storytelling. “But the themes are so much about family, community and belonging.”
Playwright Jon Brittain is writing the adaptation, with music by Cooper and Nick Coler. The pair are known for their work with Xenomania, which has produced hits for artists including Sugababes, Kylie Minogue and Girls Aloud.
Producers say further details about the musical, including casting and premiere dates, will be announced in due course.
